Plans to start a Meals On Wheels program in Vandergrift started to take shape in 1988 when several people joined forces to look into the possibility of such a venture. The meal preparations started in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Emerson Avenue; but when it outgrew the facility, a committee was formed to see about a bigger location. Those on the committee were: Bill, Vince and BoBo Naccarato, Joe Martin, Ralph Taylor, Guido and Carmello DePaul, Flo Yatsky, Grace Risher, Evelyn McVay, Gail McKeever and Jane Foster.
This committee helped to lay the foundation for the present day Meals program. Coming under the umbrella of Lutheran Services, the Vandergrift Meals On Wheels program raised funds - from local churches, organizations, and private donors - to purchase equipment and other items needed for the day-to-day operations. The Greek Orthodox Church agreed to open it’s basement facility for the housing of the Meals program.
So it was on March 19, 1989 the Vandergrift Meals On Wheels officially began. At that time there were 150 different people volunteering to cook, prepare the rest of the food, drive and deliver the meals to the clients. Today there are 90 people who do these same jobs. From the year 2000 through October, 2015 - 265,328 Meals have been prepared, delivered and served to the clients; 81,882 volunteer hours have been given to the program during this same period of time.
The Vandergrift Meals On Wheels parted company with Lutheran Services in 2010 and is now an independent, incorporated organization; this change was due in part to changing tax and liability laws. The group is now known as Vandergrift Area Meals On Wheels , Inc.
There are 9 routes that deliver meals Monday through Friday. They include Vandergrift, East & West Vandergrift, part of Parks Township & Kepple Hill, West Leechburg and Allegheny Township.
We appreciate all the support given to the Meals On Wheels program from area businesses, churches, individuals as well as other organizations. For more information or to volunteer your services, call 724-567-7893 any morning.
