Information on Volunteering with Vandergrift Meals on Wheels
Basic Information:
Cooks - 6am to 9:45am - make the soup, salad, prepare and serve all hot foods.
Table Workers - 7:30 - 9:45am - prepare the sandwiches, pizza (Fridays), fruit; packing the brown bags for each route. They also help with the serving the hot meal, sealing it, and then cleaning the tables before leaving.
The “Bagger” - 7:15 - 9:45am - responsible for doing the diabetic bags, count the brown bags for each route and put them in the boxes; count out meal and soup containers and lids, and make up the ‘order of serving’ list for the soup and meals. Finally the bagger puts the soup and hot, sealed meals in the coolers or boxes.
Drivers and Deliverers - No later than 9:15am - ?. They are to look over their route schedule to see how many are on, note any changes (clients off, new clients), etc. Drivers and delivers are also to count their bags, soup and hot meals to make sure they have enough for everyone on their route. On Fridays when client fees are collected, the deliverers write a receipt in duplicate for each client who pays, leaving the bottom copy with the client. They bring the money and the top receipt back to the Meals building where 2 intake people count and record what is collected. Deliverers are asked to wait until they receive an “OK” before leaving.
New Volunteers are always needed. They may not get a regular position immediately, but we are in great need for substitutes, especially drivers and deliverers.
The cost of meals is $3 per day. Total cost for a week: everyday (M-F) - $15; MWF - $9. Meals can be paid with cash or check weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, etc.
Bad weather cancellations. Closing the program will be decided by members of the Executive Board and will be made as early as possible. Notification can be found on Channel 11 after 6am; either their TV channel or website will carry the information. All workers for any days Meals is cancelled will be called and given that information.
